Two types of music labels:
Independant Record Labels
Independent record labels also known as 'Indie record labels' is a record label that functions without funding from major labels. There are many artists that are part of this for example Olivia formally part of the group G-unit who is now part of the Independent record labels.

Examples of Independant Record Labels
'Big Four' labels are record labels that are controlled by a coporate umbrella organixation called a 'music group'. A music group is usually owned by a holding company which often has non music division. A music group controls and consists of music publishing companies, record (sound recording) manufactureres record distributors and record labels.
Research has shown that as of 2007, the 'Big Four' labels controlled 70% of world music market.

Record labels are the main investor/developers of artists globally. Record labels not only pay for recording and mixing the albums but also pay for the music videos produced for the song.
Research indicates 23% of record labels revenue is invested into their artists. They also make profit and sales from underwriting artists toruing costs.

(recently removes due to financial crisis and under performance)

Sony Music Entertainment (the oligoploy) are in many industries ranging from music to even home appliances. Also, they develop products in gaming and even technology. There are around 14 different records the Sony (the umbrella group) which is why SME has become one of the most known major record label compared to the rest.

Sony Music Entertainment establishes their identity by working together with smaller record labels to create different activities which is thus benificial to the companies and the record labels.

- Established in 1929
- Taken over by CBS in 2004 (columbia Broadcasting System) part of the 'Big Three' labels.
- Profit as of 2012 is $6 Billion

Record labels use 'intertexual' methods to positively exploit their artist. Examples of this is featuring the artist's songs in movies or adverts.
